What do counsellors do?
Guidance counsellors basically help all students in preparing for life. Students can rely on guidance counsellors for assistance in their academics, personal problems, career goals, and social life issues such as bullying. Guidance Counsellors often conduct one-on-one or group sessions, presentations, and workshops, Health and Family Life sessions to better help our students be the best versions of themselves and by extension their families. Overall, the goal of guidance counsellors is to ensure that every student reaches their fullest potential in life.
What Can a Guidance Counsellor Do for Me?
The guidance counsellors are there to assist students in any way possible. Counsellors are there to help, even when you may feel there is no one else or you are beyond help. They can help to guide you in the direction you want to go with your life inside and outside of school.
They are someone you can confide in and trust. If you are having troubles at home, at work, or even in your circle of friends, a guidance counsellor can be a listening ear. More than that, they can often offer helpful advice on how to deal with your situation. They can help you achieve academic goals, deal with bullying, improve self-esteem, and can even help those in extreme circumstances, such as homelessness.
What about Parents?
The reach of the guidance counsellors may go beyond students. In the creation of a productive and caring environment for students, we also work with the parents.
Guidance counsellors explain and strategize about student academics and provide support for families in difficult phases in their life, such as coping with the loss of a loved one or a divorce.
Parents can reach out to the school to request academic evaluations for their children, to better understand their child's grades. They can also express any other concerns regarding their child, such as worries of bullying, mental illness, and so on. Parents can and should communicate with the guidance counsellor about any outside help the student may be receiving.
The guidance counsellor is a great source of help for both parents and students alike, a person who can help you understand educational goals and meet them. It is not uncommon to be struggling with school, mental health, or life in general. Many feel isolated, especially young people who are still developing their voice and their place in the world. The school’s guidance counsellors give our students the resources to meet their challenges and thrive in school and life.
